The best place in Nevada to be.

Now that’s probably a stretch, but I agree with most of this article from Fortune magazine about Elko:
Elko, Nevada: where the recession never hit
It’s actually a great read, lots of information, past and present, about the beautiful town of Elko, Nevada.

Vegas, Baby! Part 2

Now with more mapping goodness!
Below is the route we took from Elko to Vegas.  Note the right turn at Ely, which takes you to the “Lund Cutoff” on highway 318.  That cuts off about an hour from the alternate route on 93 through Pioche and Caliente.

It’s a pretty boring drive, most of it looks exactly [...]

Vegas Baby, part 1

July 29th, 2009 · 2 Comments

I’m still tired after a whirlwind trip to Vegas over the weekend.  And I only had one drink!
We packed up the rental car (a 2009 Impala) Thursday night.  It’s a nice car, leather, sunroof, giant trunk.  It served us very well the whole trip and was very comfortable.
The boys and I hit the road about [...]

Help me Greg Oden, you’re my only hope!

July 22nd, 2009 · 2 Comments

I’m headed to Las Vegas this weekend with the boys.  We plan to leave Friday morning, arrive in Vegas around lunchtime, stay until Sunday and arrive back in Elko on Sunday afternoon.
The trip was originally planned for just me to go to the USA Basketball tryouts to see a few Portland Trailblazers play.  It was supposed [...]

10 things I love about Elko, Nevada (in no particular order)

Basque food. — The Star, Biltoki’s, etc. Plus Chorizos at just about every event!
The sun — As much as I hate the extreme heat and cold, waking up to a bright sunny day 80% of the time is nice.

Great customer service — some businesses are great and still give off that friendly small-town vibe

I have soft hands.

October 8th, 2008 · 4 Comments

Awhile back I was at a casino with the wife.  A friend of mine introduced me to his girlfriend, and when I shook her hand, she commented “you have really soft hands”.  I think I managed a feeble “thanks” but it has bothered me ever since.  I mean, yeah, I’ve never been much for manual [...]

Winner, winner, chicken dinner!

August 6th, 2008 · 1 Comment

I like to think I’m an intelligent person, but I like to gamble anyway.  I played the lottery when we lived in Portland, even though I’m fully aware that lotteries are a tax on stupid people who are bad at math.  I guess there’s always just that little sliver of hope that we’ll hit the [...]
