Garage Sale Season is finally here!

June 17th, 2008 · 2 Comments

I thought it would never arrive.  The wife and I hit up quite a few garage sales over the weekend.  I picked up a belkin wireless-G router (unopened) for $5 and a USB wireless-G adapter for $3.  Got a nice framed Elko County poster (from 1989!) for $10 and picked up a lizard/rabbit/critter cage for the boy for only $5.

The garage sales here in Elko are a lot different than the ones I’m used to back in Portland.   People like to sell drinks/donuts at the ones here, which is nice.  Last year I even got an indian taco from a garage sale over in the Elko Indian Colony area.  A lot of the sales start at 6am or 7am, and the good stuff is usually gone by 10.  Most of the time the signs people use here just have the addresses on them, so I like to map out my travels first at home.  The Elko Daily Free Press is a good place to start, and they also print a nice garage sale map in the Friday editions of the paper.

Happy Hunting!

Garage sales! ACK!!! I hate garage sales… but not because you can’t find great stuff at low prices. I hate them because my wife and kids can rationalize buying nearly *ANYTHING*. Here are some recent examples of things that came home from garage sales:

    - remote control boat without battery pack or charger
    - stuffed scarecrow
    - miniature end table (useless)
    - another end table (to crowd the boys’ room)
    - a carpet sweeper (that broke 1 day layer)
    - miscelaneous toys and other items that add to the nasty clutter in our house.

The office has turned into one of “those rooms.” You know… kind of room where everyone dreads entering… where you literally step on or crawl over everything… where the door won’t open all the way, and you always want to leave it closed due to the shame.

Granted, family organizational skills play a significant part, but my family’s pervasive garage sale addiction add to the mess.

I’m as guilty as the next guy on bringing home garage sale crap. The last few weeks we’ve rationalized it with “well, if we don’t use it we can just put it in *our* garage sale in a couple weeks!” Hopefully next weekend we can do exactly that.
